Welcome 2014

Crack the DAT / Winter Kick-Off Meeting

If you plan to apply for schools this summer, or if you plan to take the DAT in the future, now is the best time to begin your preparation. In order to help get you steered in the right direction, we have put together a couple of meetings geared towards DAT prep. This Wednesday, January 22nd, we will have representatives from each of the major DAT prep courses (Kaplan, Ace, & BYU) give a short presentation on their programs to help you decide which program, if any, you feel will best help prepare you for the DAT. Discounts will be given at this meeting. We will also have students from our club (that performed exceptionally well of the DAT) present their methods and what resources they found to be the most beneficial!

The following Thursday, January 30th, Chad McAllister, from Chad’s Videos (, will be presenting to our club about DAT preparation. For those of you who were unable to attend our opening social (or had to leave early), Chad gave a presentation on a similar topic during that meeting and it was amazing! Hence why we are having him return for our Crack the DAT event this semester. This meeting will be less of a sales pitch, and more of a comprehensive presentation on some great ideas on how you should prepare for the DAT. For those of you who have done any sort of DAT prep know that Chad is your best friend. Being able to meet with him in-person is kind of like meeting a rockstar, but a rockstar that will help you get into dental school!

There shouldn't be many excuses that keep you away from either of these two meetings, they are probably the most beneficial meetings of the year!!

Leadership Position Available

Our treasurer got married over Christmas break and has moved away… Leaving behind a vacancy in our club leadership. As treasurer, you would be expected to work with the meetings coordinator and the school liaisons to ensure that we have food (usually pizza) at our meetings. You also will serve as an extension of the presidency. We are looking for someone that can serve for this semester, and continue their service through the 2014-2015 school year. Please fill out the following APPLICATION if you interested in filling this position.

We also are opening the application for next school year. New leadership positions (with the exception of treasurer) will start transitioning in after being selected and officially begin after graduation in April. We need a new president, vice president, secretary, treasurer (which will start immediately), webmaster, service chair, 2 school liaisons, meetings coordinator, advertising chair, and social media chair. Please have your applications in by 11:59pm on Friday, February 28th, 2014. Applications received after then will not be considered.

Service Opportunities

Be looking for e-mails from Dania Vargas, our service leader, for upcoming service events. We have lots of great opportunities to serve this semester. Events such as Give Kids a Smile and the Stonehaven Dental day are great ways to reach out to the community, get more acquainted with the dental profession, and beef up your application. Serving will help you become a better person and gain some great experience that the dental schools will love to see! Please be willing to serve when these opportunities arise!

BYU Pre-Dental Club Mentoring Program

ATTN CLUB MEMBERS: Below is a link to the form to sign-up for the BYU Pre-Dental Club Mentoring Program. We need as many mentors to sign-up as possible! If you have taken the DAT and applied to dental school, you are a prime candidate for the program. This program is basically to give underclassman a "big brother/sister" to help them get through their undergrad here at BYU, knowing which classes to take to be the most prepared for the DAT and to produce a strong application. This does not require anything more than answering some questions from your mentee here and there. Underclassman, this is a great opportunity so please sign-up!

Thank you! We hope to see many of you at this week's meetings! We are going to try to mix the meals up for the meetings a little to prevent having pizza three nights in a row! Keep working hard and building your application!

Busy Week Ahead, Marquette and UoP Visit Last Week

This coming week will be a busy one: Western, UNLV, ASDOH, MOSDOH, Midwestern and Dalhousie. SIX SCHOOLS visiting in one week! Be sure to take advantage of these great opportunities to familiarize yourself with these schools and learn how to make yourself a more competitive applicant! We hope to see you all in attendance!

We were fortunate to have two great dental schools come to visit our dental club this past week. Brian Trecek from Marquette spoke to us on Tuesday followed by Stan Constantino from UoP on Thursday. Both guest speakers gave great advice to pre-dental students along with informing us about their respective universities. Thank you both for your time and for coming out to meet with our pre-dental students!

 Great turnout for the meeting!

2013 Opening Social

This past Thursday, we had our fall 2013 Fall Opening Social! We were privileged to host Dr. Barbara Miller (head of admissions at Baylor College of Dentistry), Dr. David Kaiser (advisor to the BYU Pre-Dental Club and the PreProfessional Office), Ashley from Community Health Connect, and Chad McAllister & Dr. Alan Halls (co-founders of and Chad's Videos).

One of our club members was chosen at random to receive a free iPad Mini courtesy of Coursesaver! Wow! Dr. Miller held one-on-one interviews with members of the club. It turned out to be a great event with a lot of great information received!

We have two more dental schools visiting this coming week! Tuesday we will be meeting with someone from the admissions committee of Marquette and Thursday we will be meeting with someone from the admissions committee of UOP. While free pizza is provided for club members at all club meetings, we hope that you will take the time to come make invaluable contacts at these great dental schools and learn to better prepare yourself for acceptance into dental school and a successful experience in dental school!

Stonehaven Smiles Service Project

Yesterday, volunteers from our club worked alongside Stonehaven Smiles (Lehi, UT) to provide dental care to those in need. 25+ club members came out! It was a great turnout everyone was there on time and ready to help. Everyone was assigned to an operatory, sterilization or helping guide patients. This was a very hands on service which the volunteers and patients loved. The volunteers in the operatories assisted the dentists in both restorations or extractions. We all had a great time interacting with the patients and doctors. This was a great service experience! Be looking for your next opportunity!
